I am not ashamed to admit that I am a logo geek. My F3 workout buddies can attest to my collection of pom hats bearing hockey logos from the 1970s, and in fact, if given the chance I would compel a certain hockey team to return to the greatest logo in sports history. The Milwaukee Brewers’ current ball-in-glove logo must be in any sports fan’s top 10, but its “City Connect” logo cannot. I think that the FedEx logo is clever. I read the Uni-Watch blog regularly for years. Yes, a logo geek.
The National Basketball Association’s logo is memorable not because it features Hall of Famer Jerry West’s silhouette (it helps, though), but because it tells you what the NBA is – a basketball league. I wanted something similar when planning my firm.
But what does a law firm depict? Scales? Overdone. A gavel? Not the vibe I wanted. My initials? Okay, but if I chose unwisely, the logo could lead someone to an insurance broker, a school system or a consulting firm.
Just before I launched my firm, my family took a trip to Europe to celebrate our time together before my youngest graduated high school and entered college (sniff). It dawned on me over a beer with my bride at the Aloft Munich that I offered my clients the same thing that we were celebrating at that moment – time. Indeed, everyone everyday gets the same amount of time. You cannot buy more and you cannot sell your excess.
I’ll tell you something, baby, that’s a fact. Never see a hearse with a luggage rack. – Social Distortion, “You Can’t Take it With You”
A handful of Aloft Munich cocktail napkins quickly turned into a sketch pad. I had a working copy after a number of iterations, which coincidentally got better with more beer. As it turned out, while I knew my youngest was a budding logo geek as well, I did not know that he had been working on the technical skills needed to execute a logo. It was a hobby. I commissioned him and he returned the final product in two tries (says a proud father).
The logo consists of my initials with a 1920s Art Deco feel. If you look closely enough, you will also see an an abstracted hourglass to represent that precious commodity of time. I help broker-dealers and registered investment advisers achieve peace of mind that they are meeting their regulatory obligations, so they can spend more time serving their clients and their business and less time serving their regulators. Contact me if you want to bring decades of Wall Street experience to your firm.
No, it is not “The Logo”, but I think that it is meaningful all the same.
